چکیده

BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION: Birth Asphyxia (Perinatal Asphyxia) in newborn is a condition caused by the inadequate supply of oxygen before, during, or just after birth. Kidney most damaged organ asphyxiated full-term infants. Theophylline considered to be effective as adenosine antagonist reducing renal injury related birth asphyxia OBJECTIVE: To determine mean serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate term neonates with perinatal prophylactic dose theophylline compared that control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, total 60 fulfilling inclusion criteria were included study,--removed for blind review--. After taking written informed consent, all into either A (Theophylline group) B (Placebo group). group received single intravenous aminophylline (5 mg/kg, 0.25 ml/kg) while ml/kg normal saline was administered placebo over five-minute period within first hour presentation. Each patient evaluated using predesigned proforma. The 24-hour fluid intake urine output recorded during 5 days life. assess infant’s function, their creatinine, clearance (GFR) determined on one, three five between both groups. RESULTS: age cases 10.73 ± 8.11 hours control 14.33 7.52 hours. there 17(56.67%) male 13(43.33%) female cases. level 0.78 0.29 1.15 0.51 statistically lower group, p-value < 0.05. Glomerular 31.59 6.35 21.17 7.38 3with CONCLUSION: Through findings study, therapeutic efficacy confirmed terms maintaining rate. So, future function can protected introducing we reduce risk mortality. KEY WORDS: asphyxia, Sarnat grading system, theophylline,

Echocardiographic evaluation of cardiovascular complications after birth asphyxia in term neonates

Objectives After birth asphyxia, a variety of hemodynamic disorders may be noted in the neonatal intensive care unit; these require appropriate recognition and management. The present study was designed to demonstrate the prevalence of heart complications amongst asphyxiated newborns. Methods Through a cohort study, 29 asphyxiated term neonates were followed since birth until amelioration of ...

Birth Asphyxia among Term Neonates at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra

The psychological and emotional stress that is brought to bear on the woman, the couple or the family when a perinatal mortality occurs is unimaginable. And similarly care-givers go through a lot of emotional stress when patients they have cared for prenatally lose their babies, though in the developing world this so often happens to the extent that care-givers soon get accustomed to perinatal ...

Theophylline for renal function in term neonates with perinatal asphyxia: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE To study whether prophylactic theophylline can reduce the incidence and/or severity of renal failure in term infants with perinatal asphyxia. STUDY DESIGN Term neonates with severe perinatal asphyxia were randomized to receive a single dose of either theophylline (study group, n = 40) or placebo (control group, n = 30) during the first hour of life. Daily weight, output/input ratio,...

Prevalence and outcomes of acute kidney injury in term neonates with perinatal asphyxia.

BACKGROUND The kidney is the most damaged organ in asphyxiated full-term infants. The severity of its damage is correlated with the severity of neurological damage. We determined the prevalence of perinatal asphyxia-associated acute kidney injury (AKI). METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study including 60 full-term neonates admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital newborn unit (NBU)...
